Fort Wayne Community Schools is inviting parents to review curriculum options for teaching English and Language Arts at all grade levels. WBOI’s Ella Abbott reports the option to review is taking a new form this year.

Families are invited to attend meetings, either in person or virtually, where materials that are being considered will be presented. Textbook adoptions have been delayed, due to a variety of reasons including the pandemic, so this time around, the district is doing things a little differently.

Fort Wayne Community Schools has tried to include parents in the decision on textbook options in the past with “textbook adoption committees” that might include parents. The district also would make textbooks publicly available with designated times for parents to come and give feedback.

Spokeswoman Krista Stockman says it’s good for parents to know what’s different about how kids are learning today.

“Parents are an important part of their children’s education and we want them to be involved, we want them to know what their children are learning.”

She says, while participation in the past was minimal, FWCS expects to see more participation because curriculum transparency has become so relevant.

FWCS is considering materials from HMH Into Reading, Fountas & Pinnell Classroom and Savvas myView for elementary school, and HMH Into Reading and Savvas myPerspectives for middle and high school.

The meetings will be on March 7 at 6 PM for elementary schools and March 9 at 6 PM for middle and high school. They will be presented both in person at the FWCS Family and Community Engagement Center and via Zoom.
