Allen County GOP neutral to Sen. Young's support of Defense of Marriage Act

When the U.S. Senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act, codifying same-sex and interracial marriage into federal law, Indiana Republican Senator Todd Young voted in favor of the bill.

That vote is drawing backlash from Republicans in Indiana.

Cass County GOP Chairman David Richey sent a letter of censure to Young and is urging all other 91 county GOP chairs to do the same.

Not all of them are quick to do so. Allen County Republican Chairman Steve Shine says he will not send such a letter because he says he has received “an equal number of calls and messages in favor and against Young’s vote.”

“For me as chairman, to choose sides between two divergent views would only cause a schism in the party, and I’m not going to do that,” Shine said.

Instead, Shine is asking anyone with an opinion on Young’s vote, either for or against, to contact Young’s office directly.
