Allen County Council Pays Settlement For Sheriff, Asks For Repayment

Allen County Sheriff's Department

Allen County has to pay out in a civil lawsuit against Sheriff David Gladieux stemming from his behavior at the Three Rivers Festival in July 2019.

But county officials aren’t happy about it, though they agreed to the settlement amount of $55,000 as suggested by a federal judge.

County council president Joel Benz said the council felt Gladieux’s actions were “repugnant” and is asking Gladieux to meet with the council to come up with a repayment plan.

The sheriff was sued earlier this year in his official capacity for shoving a teenage volunteer at last year’s Three Rivers Festival.

As he pushed the 15-year-old boy who confronted him about trying to enter a closed area, Gladieux identified himself as the sheriff.

Gladieux was also charged with misdemeanor battery and entered a pre-trial diversion program.

In a written statement Thursday, Benz said the county would have spent more money defending itself in the lawsuit and felt the settlement was the best financial decision.

They are asking Gladieux to meet with them within the next two weeks to come up with a plan to repay the taxpayers.

Gladieux could not be reached for comment.
