Science Central Opens Temporary "Heart Smart" Exhibit

Zach Bernard/WBOI News

Science Central launched a new temporary exhibit Saturday morning, which will be open until Memorial Day weekend.

Heart Smart seeks to educate both children and adults about building and maintaining a healthy heart. Science Central brought the presentation to Fort Wayne with the help of the Parkview Heart Institute and Indiana Donor Network.

Marti Cooper is the community relations coordinator with the Donor Network. She says the partnership is an opportunity to inform residents about the importance of donation.

“We can make a difference in so many lives," Cooper said. "As an organ donor I may be able to save eight lives, and I could help as many as 75 people through tissue donation.”

In addition to interactive stations, representatives from both sponsors gave hourly presentations throughout Saturday focused on heart health.

Mike GeRue is the COO of the Heart Institute, and says it’s important to help bring educational opportunities like this to Northeast Indiana.

“If everybody walks out of here saying, ‘I learned one thing today out of this exhibit that I can do to promote and change how my life is,’ that’s a success,” said GeRue.

Heart Smart will be open until May 26.

Full disclosure: Science Central executive director Martin Fisher is a volunteer host for 89.1 WBOI’s Weekly Experiment.
