Weekend Rains Flood Fields, Raise Fears Among Farmers

National Weather Service forecasters say four inches of rain have fallen over the last 24 hours making flooding worse in some areas, even over recently planted fields.

Bob Bruner is an Extension Educator at the Purdue Extension in Owen and Clay Counties. He says a food shortage shouldn’t be a concern from acres of fields under water, just the financial well-being of farmers.

"We actually have a significant inventory built up now so I don’t think we need to worry about any kind of food shortage," he says. "I think that right now we just need to worry about how do we support our farmers because right now this is a tough time for them."

Flood warnings remain in effect for most of southern Indiana until Tuesday afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast throughout the rest of the week.
