Almost Half Area's ICU Beds Filled With COVID Patients, Capacity At 17%

Available ICU capacity in northeast Indiana improved Friday, up slightly to 17 percent. COVID-19 patients make up about 42 percent of those requiring intensive care in the region.

Just under 400 people in the region are hospitalized with the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Ten deaths were reported in northeast Indiana Friday, among the 84 new deaths recorded by the Indiana State Department of Health.

Allen County reported 394 cases Friday, and two deaths. The county’s 7-day positivity rate is 17 percent.

Whitley County showed the biggest positivity jump Friday, going from 17.6 percent Monday to 21.3 percent by the end of the week.

Whitley County’s cases are predominantly found in those between the ages of 50-59 at 16.4 percent, and those 20-29 years old at 16.3 percent, according to state health statistics.

Northeast Indiana county totals for COVID-19:

  • Adams County: 32 new cases for 1,959 total. No new deaths for 24 total. 7-day positivity rate at 9.2%.
  • Allen County: 394 new cases for 21,044 total. Two new deaths for 345 total. 7-day positivity rate at 17%.
  • DeKalb County: 48 new cases for 2,190 total. Four deaths for 41 total. 7-day positivity rate at 10.7%.
  • Huntington County: 49 new cases for 1,582 total. One new death for 12 total. 7-day positivity rate at 9.9%.
  • Kosciusko County: 88 new cases for 5,214 total. One new death for 49 total. 7-day positivity rate at 11.9%.
  • LaGrange County: 26 new cases for 1,624 total. No new deaths for 34 total. 7-day positivity rate at 17.9%.
  • Noble County: 62 new cases for 2,981 total. No new deaths for 50 total. 7-day positivity rate at 11.7%.
  • Steuben County: 37 new cases for 1,723 total. No new deaths for 16 total. 7-day positivity rate at 10.7%.
  • Wabash County: 65 new cases for 2,018 total. One new death for 25 total. 7-day positivity rate at 16%.
  • Wells County: 20 new cases for 1,471 total. One new death for 36 total. 7-day positivity rate at 15.9%.
  • Whitley County: 37 new cases for 1,661 total. No new deaths for 17 total. 7-day positivity rate at 21.3%.
