In a few weeks, Fort Wayne will host the International Blind Sports Federation Qualifying competition. Readying the city for the competition, the city installed auditory crosswalks at three downtown locations.

The crosswalks are now operational, at the intersections of Washington Boulevard and Harrison Street; Calhoun Street and Washington Boulevard; and Jefferson Boulevard and Harrison Street.

The installation was a partnership between the mayor’s office, the city’s public works department, Turnstone and Visit Fort Wayne.

The International Blind Sports Federation Qualifying Competition is being held in the U.S. for the first time. From June 28 through July 9, nearly 600 delegates from 40 countries will be in Fort Wayne to participate. The top performers will qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The featured events held in Fort Wayne will be goalball and judo.

Auditory crosswalk installation will benefit anyone who visits downtown, especially those with visual impairments. The work is part of a larger project to modernize pedestrian infrastructure in Fort Wayne through an ongoing American with Disabilities Act transition plan, according to a press release.
