Fort Wayne Outlines Plan To Improve Downtown Spaces

The City of Fort Wayne set out its goals to improve downtown spaces Tuesday in the newly-released Public Realm Action Plan.

The plan doesn’t establish anything concrete, but does present a full analysis of public spaces in Fort Wayne like sidewalks, parks, public buildings and more. The plan looks at spaces that are well-utilized but also highlights areas in need of improvement.

As such, the plan outlines several pilot programs the city could tackle in order to improve certain areas of downtown. One suggestion focuses on temporarily morphing alleys “into retail corridors, event spaces and canvases for public art.”

The next steps for the city involves developing teams, seeking partnerships and possibly testing some of the ideas over the summer.

The study was funded by the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne/Knight Foundation, the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission and the Community Development Division.
