The Fort Wayne Police Department unveiled an Engage portal this week which they hope will help them guide future communications.

FWPD Chief P.J. Smith announced Monday that the department will not pursue smaller contracts after the city council voted to cancel its contract with FLOCK. He also said the 36 cameras are now offline and will be removed soon.

Even though Fort Wayne City Council canceled the contract, the police department wants to find a way to keep using the cameras they say are a valuable tool to solve crimes. Mayor Sharon Tucker says "not so fast."

On Monday, city officials announced the opening of the Engage portal to gather public comment, questions and share information about the use of Flock license-plate reading cameras.

City Councilman Russ Jehl proposed the vote delay to allow council to codify the Fort Wayne Police Department's policies for greater oversight.

Seventy-five-year-old Anita Ann Grayson died from acute exacerbation of congestive heart failure after a physical altercation inside the store.

The man had been reportedly suffering from a mental health episode, and police had responded to the home in the 1800 block of Howell Avenue multiple times in recent days.

Former Chief Scott Caudill moved into a different role within the department, while P.J. Smith takes over as new chief.

Long-time officer P.J. Smith was sworn in Thursday. The former chief, Scott Caudill, resigned effective immediately.

Update: The Allen County Coroner's Office has identified the man shot and killed by police. The officer is now recovering at home.Police were responding to a domestic disturbance call when an officer was attacked by a suspect and stabbed. Other officers fatally shot the suspect.
